Supporters of newly elected African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa have called for a vote recount over the election of Ace Magashule as the governing party’s secretary-general.
The ANC steering committee on Tuesday morning was holding an urgent meeting after former KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu’s supporters disputed the vote outcome and demanded a recount. Mchunu went against Magashule for the top post under Ramaphosa’s slate.
Following the dissolution of the NEC, which was led by former party leader Jacob Zuma, the ANC is now managed by a steering committee consisting of the secretary-general’s office, chairpersons of provinces and the party’s leagues.
On Monday, Ramaphosa defeated Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to be elected president of the ANC at the party’s elective conference in Johannesburg.
Ramaphosa received 2 440 votes against Dlamini-Zuma’s 2 261.
