SA hockey women beat Wales 8-2 (audio)

The South African women's hockey team beat Wales 8-2 on the final day of round-robin play in the Investec Cup at London's national hockey stadium on Saturday.

South Africa needed an emphatic win to ensure a likely place in Sunday’s gold medal match against England.

South Africa grabbed the opening goal of the encounter in the sixth minute. Attacking midfielder Shelley Russell made a run into the strike zone before a clinical backhand gave her side a 1-0 lead.

A Celia Evans goal in the 10th minute from a rebound doubled the lead for South Africa.

Jade Mayne added a third in the 21st minute. Four minutes later, Illse Davids made it 4-0.

A brace of second-half goals by Tarryn Bright, one from Dirkie Chamberlain and a Kathleen Taylor strike took the South African’s goal-tally to eight for the clash.

Two Welsh goals late in the game, through a penalty corner from Emma Batten and Eloise Laity, were but consolation in a match that belonged to the South Africans.
