SA’s young gun wins two opening races in Germany
Seventeen-year-old Jordan Pepper from South Africa confirmed why he is the favourite for this year's prestigious Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup championship in Germany.
: South African youngster Jordan Pepper won the opening two rounds of this year’s Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup at Hockenheim over the weekend.
Driving the Blue Label Telecoms-supported car, the teenager dominated qualifying to start each race of the opening round at Hockenheim from pole position.
Such was his pace that his time of 1 minute 57.128s was over 2/10ths better than that of his nearest rival.
A well-judged start in Saturday’s race saw him lead from lights to flag, with his closest rival over three seconds behind at the end of the 11-lap race.
Sweden’s Victor Bouveng finished second, with Germany’s Manuel Fahnauer coming home in third.
In a closely fought and high pressure second race on Sunday afternoon Pepper again held the lead from the start to take the flag 1.2 seconds clear of Fahnauer and Bouveng.
Pepper was delighted with the start to his season. “Victory in the opening race of the season is always rather special!
“My coach Lee Thompson from Racecraft, who has been supporting me since my saloon car debut, played a major role in the success,” he added.
After Sunday’s victory he spoke about his hopes. “The start of the Scirocco R-Cup season could not have gone any better for me. I feel very comfortable in the car.”
The next round is at Oschersleben from May 16 to 18.
