One dead after bus transporting Middelburg schoolkids tips over

The bus was transporting Grade 8s home from an induction school concert when it tipped over in wet weather.


One child died after a bus transporting schoolchildren from Steelpoort to Middelburg, Mpumalanga, tipped over on the R555 on Sunday afternoon, reports Middelburg Observer.

The bus was transporting HTS High School Grade 8s home from an induction school concert when it tipped over in wet weather and slid into the oncoming traffic lane, before coming to a halt on the other side of the road.

The deceased child has been identified as 13-year-old Gideon Miller, who was pinned down under the bus. He was declared dead at the scene.

The scene was cordoned off yesterday to allow for paramedics to stabilise other injured children. They had to act fast amid fears that the bus would slide further down an embankment it was resting on.
