Twenty-four hour news channel ANN7 has reportedly agreed to apologise “unreservedly” to ANC MP Derek Hanekom for false and damaging allegations made about him during one of their programmes, News24 reports.
This, after Hanekom lodged a formal complaint last month with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) over what he claimed was false and defamatory allegations about him during a panel discussion on August 11 on the outcome of the vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.
According to the report, one of the guests, Udo Froese, claimed that former president Nelson Mandela in 1996 had said that Hanekom was an apartheid agent.
The network has reportedly admitted that the allegations were false.
At the BCCSA hearing on Wednesday, ANN7’s editor-in-chief Moegsien Williams and MultiChoice’s head of regulatory compliance, Bruce Mkhize, are said to have reached an agreement with Hanekom and were expected to issue an apology on Friday and Saturday this week.
The BCCSA is also expected to issue a formal ruling at a later stage.
