Car collides with cow in Eastern Cape, stray animals impounded

One man was killed when an Audi A3 collided with the animal on the R63 between Alice and Middledrift.

A total of 43 stray animals were impounded from public roads in the Eastern Cape over Easter, while another fatal accident occurred when a car collided with a cow on Tuesday night.

Provincial traffic spokesperson Charles Bramwell said one man was killed when an Audi A3 collided with the animal on the R63 between Alice and Middledrift. Two other people were seriously injured, including the driver who was taken to Grey Hospital in King Williams due to the severity of his injuries.

“It’s alleged that speeding and roaming stray animals on that route were the … cause of the accident,” Bramwell said, adding that police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Bramwell said provincial traffic officers had stopped and checked over 15 500 vehicles from last Thursday to Tuesday as part of Easter weekend operations.

He said 2 890 summons were issued to motorists in Eastern Cape province, while 163 vehicles were towed away for not being roadworthy.

Fourteen motorists were arrested for drunken driving, while 29 others were arrested for other offences.
