GBV and femicide-focused court to launch this week

Government hopes the facility will alleviate the demand for justice services at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.

On Thursday, March 28, the government will, together with various civil society organisations, host the presidential launch of the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Declaration and the opening of the Booysens Magistrate Court in Johannesburg reports the government news agency.

The declaration is a result of the talks held during the 2018 National Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Summit, which was hosted in an effort to find solutions to the scourge of GBV and femicide.

According to the news agency, the state-of-the-art Booysens Magistrate Court offers a range of services and is fully equipped to support victims of gender-based violence and femicide. Government hopes this will alleviate the demand for justice services at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.

The R242 million facility will be located in Oakdene, south of Johannesburg, thus making it more convenient for local communities to access its services.

The court will render services including:

  • A fully fledged Sexual Offences Court;
  • Family Law services such as maintenance, domestic violence, harassment, and children’s court matters;
  • Small Claims Court services; and
  • Civil and Criminal Court services – Regional and District.
