The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) on Monday said it was aware of the 2024 unpaid allowances for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students.
This follows a delayed payment that was initially scheduled for 25 April 2025.
According to the scheme, this situation arose from transitional challenges experienced during the switch to direct payment partners and the subsequent return of this function to Nsfas during the 2024 academic year.

“This transition necessitated a complex reconciliation process, which has been undertaken concurrently with the commencement of the 2025 academic year,” it said.
Here are the payment dates
Nsfas noted that it is nearing the completion of this reconciliation process and is committed to resolving the outstanding payments.
Here is when payments will be paid out:
- Monthly TVET allowances for the 2025 academic year will be paid on 25 May 2025
- A special payment run for all unpaid TVET allowances from the 2024 academic year will be processed on 31 May 2025
“Nsfas remains steadfast in its commitment to working collaboratively with the sector to meet its obligations and address systemic challenges to ensure the efficient disbursement of funds to eligible students.”

DHET minister on Nsfas delays
On 28 April, the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Nobule Nkabane, noted that approximately 800 students were experiencing challenges with the transfer of funds.
According to the minister, the delay was caused by “a system glitch related to the size of the batch files.”
The payments were later processed on 26 April and reflected in student accounts by 27 April.
“We recognise the impact of these delays as students depend entirely on their allowances for living expenses.”
Nkabane added that progress has been made in addressing appeals submitted for 2025. The Nsfas Appeals and Tribunals Committee is currently reviewing outcomes to ensure consistency and proper policy application.
Students are encouraged to regularly check their accounts for any additional documentation requirements related to their appeals.
