Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says he has referred Western Cape Premier Helen Zille to the party’s disciplinary structures for investigation following her defence of colonialism on social media after she said it wasn’t all bad.
On Thursday morning, Zille caused an uproar on Twitter when she tweeted “for those claiming legacy of colonialism was ONLY negative‚ think of our independent judiciary‚ transport infrastructure‚ piped water etc”.
Maimane told Talk Radio 702‘s Eusebius McKaiser, the former DA leader’s her comments on the legacy of colonialism were “unacceptable and offensive”.
“Her actions and statement was completely unacceptable and indefensible, and therefore I have asked for it to be investigated fully, to say where does the organisation goes from this point forward because she is a member of the DA,” he said.
The disciplinary committee is expected to establish whether Zille had transgressed the DA’s social media policy and come up with disciplinary measures against her.
Zille has since apologised “unreservedly for a tweet that may have come across as a defence of colonialism”.
