Operation Fiela a winner in Midrand

Ekurhuleni North Cluster ran a random raid in Rabie Ridge taverns and scrapyards.

An integrated police ‘Operation Fiela’ in Rabie Ridge was carried out to try and curb the crimes that were taking place in the community.

This was organised by the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, the Midrand Reporter reports.

Police ran random raids on 23 November on a number of scrapyards and taverns in the area, which resulted in the closure of some taverns. A large number of unlicensed firearms and drugs were also confiscated.

“The community seems to be under siege, because crimes like car hijackings, house robberies, murders, theft and business robberies plus other related crimes are increasing in the area,” said Rabie Ridge police spokesperson Captain Matsobane Mofana Masela.

The operation yielded the following results:

  • More than 10 000 litres of liquor was confiscated from three taverns
  • 1 firearm was found
  • Live ammunition was confiscated
  • 5g of drugs were discovered
  • Illegal equipment used to grind metal was confiscated from a scrapyard
  • A hijacked Mercedes-Benz was recovered
  • Nine suspects arrested for liquor-related offences
  • One person was arrested for the possession of suspect stolen goods.

The station commander of the Rabie Ridge Police Station, Colonel Johanna Ngoma said, “This is hopefully a lesson learned to all those that have been detained, plus a warning to those who have not yet been caught.”

“I am glad the operation was a success and would like to thank the Metro police and Public Order Policing for assisting in the operation which is not only an achievement for Rabie Ridge police but also an achievement for the cluster.”
