Correctional Services official Khaya Somgqeza dies in car crash

Khaya Somgqeza had previously worked as divisional manager of International Relations in Parliament before assuming his new role.

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services is in mourning after a man named Khaya Somgqeza lost his life in a recent car crash.

Somgqeza worked as the head of office for Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Phathekile Holomisa.

News24 reports that the incident occurred outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

This on the same day that Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo was being laid to rest after losing his own life in a car crash in Gauteng a week prior.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola is said to be “deeply saddened” by news of Somgqeza’s passing.

“His death has sent shockwaves in the ministry, as well as both departments under the ministry’s leadership,” said Lamola in a statement.

“Khaya Somgqeza had previously worked as divisional manager of International Relations in Parliament, before assuming his role as the head of Holomisa’s office,” he added.

The minister added that Somgqeza’s commitment to his work and vast experience enhanced relations between the ministry and various stakeholders.

At the time of writing, no additional details regarding Somgqeza’s memorial and funeral had been shared. The ministry will reportedly share details with the late official’s colleagues once they become available.
