SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach indicated in a Facebook post that the gardener had passed away on the day of the incident.

“Condolences to his family. Our inspectors tried their best to save the man from the dogs,” she said.

The severely injured gardener, who had worked on the property for three years, was transported by ER24 paramedics to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

ER24’s Russel Meiring, explaining their intervention, said: “Assessments showed that the man had sustained numerous bite wounds and showed no signs of life. Paramedics immediately initiated CPR and advanced life support interventions in an effort to revive the patient. Fortunately, after a few short minutes, the patient’s vital signs returned. Once stable, the man was transported to Leratong Provincial Hospital for urgent care.”

However, prior to administering medical treatment, Meiring said the paramedics were unable to gain access to the patient who was lying in the garden and had to call law enforcement and the SPCA to intervene.

Upon the SPCA’s arrival, Mandy said: “Two of our inspectors jumped out of their vehicles, grabbed the severely injured man as gently as possible, and placed him in the back of an SPCA vehicle, but the dogs kept returning and charging the inspectors and the severely injured man. Our third inspector had his hands full chasing the dogs away.”

After the man was rescued, Mandy said four of the six dogs were euthanised.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said no case has been opened as yet.
