Ladysmith policewoman goes the extra mile to help young girl

Police vehicles were busy elsewhere with complaints, so Constable Hlongwane decided to use her personal vehicle to get to the root of the problem

On Sunday afternoon, December 3, a young girl entered the Ladysmith SAPS Community Service Centre, visibly upset and crying, Ladysmith Gazette reports.

Constable Hlengiwe Hlongwane was one of the police officers on duty that day. She consoled the youngster and began to tactfully interview the girl. It was later established that the girl had been experiencing problems at home since September this year.

She had left home to live with a friend while trying to have the issue worked out. Unfortunately, her problem seemed to be escalating even though there had been intervention from elder members of the family.

Constable Hlongwane committed herself to try and work out an amicable solution to the problem.

Police vehicles were busy elsewhere with complaints, so Constable Hlongwane decided to use her personal vehicle to get to the root of the problem. There was no one to be found at the girl’s house, so the youngster was taken home by Constable Hlongwane after her shift ended.

The girl’s aunt was eventually contacted later the same evening and informed as to the whereabouts of the girl. An appointment was set up and the issues were discussed in earnest.

Discussions continued over a period of five days, during which time the girl lived with the Constable and her family. During the same period, the youngster collected her report from school. She passed, despite the issues that troubled her during the year. The girl is now back at home.

The intervention by Constable Hlongwane and her family has had a profound effect on the girl and she has pledged to continue a relationship with the Hlongwane family.
