Woman gives birth on pavement in Alberton

By Elzaan Pienaar

A mother gave birth on the pavement in front of Stepping Stone Hospice’s shop in New Redruth, Alberton, on Thursday afternoon, reports Alberton Record.

Chris Nel, Stepping Stone Hospice’s retail supervisor, jumped into action when he saw the mother struggling to walk. “While I was watching her, the baby just seemed to drop out,” he said.

Chris’s experience as a Level 3 First Aider came in handy as he helped the mother, Felda Ngubeni, and helped the baby to start breathing.

“This is the first time I helped at a birth, and whilst there were a few tense moments before the ambulance arrived [when] the little one stop breathing and I had to resuscitate her, I can honestly say that this was an incredibly humbling experience,” said Nel.

Brenda Peach, a retail manager, made sure the mother was comfortable, while Chris and the paramedics from Med Help Emergency Services and National Paramedics cared for the baby.

The mother and newborn baby girl were taken to the Clinton Hospital where they were stabilised and transferred to Natalspruit Hospital.

Family members of the mother promised to bring Stepping Stone Hospice news of how Felda and her newborn little girl were doing.
