African National Congress MP Pravin Gordhan has called on Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire his boss President Jacob Zuma in January if he emerges victorious in the ANC’s leadership race.
Speaking in Cape Town on Thursday as part of a panel discussion at the Morningstar Investment Conference, Gordhan said the new ANC leadership under Ramaphosa should tell “Zuma to go and live in Nkandla”, TimesLIVE reported.
This is not the first time Gordhan has called on Zuma to step down from office. Speaking in July during a panel discussion on former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy at Lilliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg, Gordhan said the president should “move aside and let somebody take over this country”.
The former finance minister was sacked from the finance department along with his then deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, earlier this year in March during a controversial midnight Cabinet reshuffle.
Gordhan lamented that “looters” did not care about the consequences of corruption and state capture for the country.
“What you have at the moment is a group of people who are willing to do anything in order … to loot from the state firstly. Secondly‚ they don’t care about consequences,” he said.
Gordhan and Jonas – who was also part of the panel discussion in Cape Town – both warned that institutions such as National Treasury‚ the Financial Intelligence Centre and the Reserve Bank were at the top list of institutions to be captured for nefarious reasons, as well as Statistics South Africa to a lesser extent.
