Sports stars, citizens to celebrate Olympic Day

The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) will host the 2014 Olympic Day at Ivory Park, Midrand, on Saturday, in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng province.

Olympic Day is an annual worldwide event of the Olympic movement which encourages people to become more active while highlighting the benefits of physical activity.

The event will give South Africans the chance to learn about the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, Sascoc said on Tuesday.

About 2500 people are expected to take part in Olympic Day, to be held under the theme “Move, Learn and Discover”.

Sporting activities include an 8km run, a 5km walk, gymnastics, five-a-side football, netball and karate.

Other activities on the programme include advice on athletic careers and doping prevention, an insight into sport and the environment, a mobile test unit and High Performance Centre services.

Some of South Africa’s leading athletes, from a variety of sporting codes, will be on hand to share their experiences with members of the public.
