Weather alert: Western Cape faces flood and wind warnings as cold front hits

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Tuesday, 20 May 2025.

Disruptive rain and damaging winds are forecast for parts of the Western Cape, with officials warning of flooding and travel disruptions. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, Tuesday, 20 May

Impact-based warnings

The weather service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain that could lead to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements, roads, low-lying areas, and bridges in the Cape Winelands, Cape Metropole, West Coast, and western parts of the Overberg Districts of the Western Cape.

Saws further warned of damaging winds and waves that would make navigation at sea difficult and cause localised disruptions to small harbours and ports between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

A yellow level 2 warning for damaging wind resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea and localised disruptions to small harbours and ports between Plettenberg Bay and Algoa Bay.

Damaging interior winds resulting in longer travel times, problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes, localised damage to informal and formal settlements and communication/power disruptions are expected over Northern Cape, except in the northwest and extreme northern parts, northern parts of Western Cape, central and northern parts of Eastern Cape, western Free State and southwest.

Fire danger warnings

The weather service has warned of extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Beaufort West Municipality of Western Cape, Thembelihle Municipality of Northern Cape and the extreme northwestern parts of Free State.

Advisories

Wet, windy, and cold to very cold conditions are expected over western high-lying areas of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape and Free State, with a possibility of light snow along the high-lying mountain tops of Western Cape, Eastern Cape up to the Lesotho until Wednesday. Farmers and small stock farmers are advised to provide proper shelter, dry bedding, and energy-rich feed to protect their animals against these conditions.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Tuesday, 20 May:

Gauteng:

Residents of Gauteng expected it to be partly cloudy and cool, but warm in places in the extreme north.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “high”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents can expect morning fog over the Highveld; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm. It will be hot in places in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

The day will have morning fog in places; otherwise, it will be fine and warm.

North West:

Fine, windy and cool-to-warm weather awaits North West residents, becoming partly cloudy with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the central and western parts.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm weather with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme east.

Northern Cape:

The day will be partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme west.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect cloudy and cold to cool weather with widespread showers and rain over the south-western parts but isolated to scattered over the eastern interior.

Eastern Cape (western half):

It will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the east. Light snowfalls can be expected on the high western mountains overnight.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The day will be cool in the north; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers from the west in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can look forward to fine and warm weather.
