Alleged WhatsApp rapist nabbed in Tongaat

The man used WhatsApp to lure women to him with job offers before raping and robbing them of their belongings.

A man who used WhatsApp to lure women to him by promising them jobs, then raping and robbing them, has been apprehended by Tongaat police and the K9 Unit.

The 30-year-old man was arrested for rape, robbery and kidnapping at Fairbreeze in Tongaat with the help of one of his victims on July 21.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the rapist would specifically steal his victim’s cellphones in order to access their contact lists to look for more potential victims.

“He would then Whatsapp her female friends to entice them meet him,” said Gwala.

“In one incident, he promised two women jobs, met them and took them into a secluded area in the sugar cane fields where he tied-up one of the victim’s while terrorising the other.

“One victim managed to escape and alerted the police, but when they got to sugar cane fields, the man had disappeared.”

Undaunted, the perpetrator continued trying to hunt for more women, unaware that police were now on to him.

He was finally caught in the act while trying to tempt yet another victim using the same modus operandi.

“He was taken to Tongaat police station for detention and will be charged for rape, robbery and kidnapping. He will appear in court soon.”

KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their  determination into apprehending the suspect.

“We urge other women who had been victims of this scenario to come forward and report the incidents.

“We also advise all women to refrain from believing any job promises from strangers,” he said.
