Pet cat mutilated in Ballito

A Ballito family’s male cat was found with its tail chopped off and anus ripped out on Friday night, July 22.

The brutally mutilated Bobby somehow made his way back to his home inside the Bay Ridge residential complex in Ballito at 9.30pm, with his tail hanging from a thin piece of skin, dragging behind him on the ground and his intestine exposed, to seek help from his humans, the Venter family.

“There was so much blood in the house pouring from Bobby’s body,” said devastated owner, Hilda Venter.

Venter said they rushed the six-year-old Bobby to the Ballito Veterinary Clinic where Dr Shrey Venkatkumar fought hard to save the cat’s life.

But Bobby was beyond saving and he had to be euthanised.

“I can not imagine how much pain he must have been in,” said Venter, her voice quivering with grief.

Dr Venkatkumar said there was no evidence to prove that Bobby’s mutilation was the result of a willful act of animal cruelty, however the cut did not look like a normal animal bite and could also have been caused by a fence or gate.

“We have had Bobby since he was six weeks old and he spent most of his time indoors, only leaving the house to use the toilet,” said Venter.

Venter said Bobby’s 18 month old companion, Ginger, has not been the same since the incident.

“He has hardly been home and seems to be searching for his beloved lost friend,” said Venter.

The Durban and Coast SPCA is calling for witnesses of this any acts of animal cruelty to come forward and present evidence if possible so that criminal cases can be opened.

“Animal torture is a violation of the Animal Protection Act and carries a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment or a fine of R60 000,” said SPCA Durban and Coast spoeksperson, Lindsey Concer.
