Paddling the mighty Zambezi

Charles Murless is a Ballito resident who is ready to paddle the length of the Zambezi for the conservation of a rare endangered bird.

Ballito resident Charles Murless, and his Pietermaritzburg partner Patrick Reid are undertaking to paddle the entire length of the Zambezi river in a fibreglass canoe.
The effort is being completed in stages, and the two have already completed over half of the 2754km journey. The pair are working in conjunction with Birdlife South Africa in an effort to raise funds for the conservation of the endangered White-Winged Flufftail.
In June 2014, Murless and his partner will paddle the top section of the river in crocodile and hippo- potamus populated waters, aiming to cover the 850km section in about a month, paddling every day with two 2-day breaks. This section of the river will take the two through Angola from the source at Mwinilunga to Sioama Falls, just below the Barotsi flood plains.
Funds will be raised in the form of pledges, which will only be payable after their journey is complete.
You can pledge a monetary amount per km they complete. In order to pledge, or for further details on the White-Winged Flufftail, contact Nicholas Theron at nick.theron@birdlife.org.za, or on 078 5458977.
