Cellphone networks explain depleting data

Data is apparently not vanishing without a reason.

After frustrated consumers have been complaining about their data and airtime disappearing, cellphone providers have tried to explain to their customers why this is happening.

MTN and Vodacom said that customers do not always realise how much data their phone uses.

While people have been complaining left, right and centre, MTN said none of the cases they investigated showed data vanishing into thin air.

The networks said that with 4G and LTE connections, more data is used because the internet connectivity is faster.

Even though consumers said they switched off automatic updates on their smartphones, MTN and Vodacom said a lot of apps run in the background even if it is not open.

Social networks like Instagram and Facebook, who recently upgraded to high-definition images, use large amounts of data.
