Medupi’s unit six fully operational
The contribution of Medupi's Unit six already prevented load shedding for the past few weeks.
Unit six of the Medupi Power Station was officially opened this weekend after it was first synchronised to the national grid on March 2.
The unit has been producing electricity to the national grid intermittently while going through regular tests.
The unit’s contribution to the grid helped Eskom to do maintenance without implementing load shedding for the past three weeks.
The Medupi Power Station Project is a green-fields coal-fired power plant comprising of six units rated in total at 4 764MW installed capacity.
The power station is expected to be fully installed by 2019.
Once completed, the power station will be the fourth largest coal-fired plant and the largest dry-cooled power station in the world.
The planned operational life of the power station is 50 years.
