Zulu nation to honour King Shaka

King Shaka Commemoration Day is on Thursday, September 24.

Spears clash, warriors collide and the dust dances to the rhythmic beat of a drum, leading hundreds of Zulus in the ‘zokugiya’, a traditional Zulu dance.

Heritage Day in Kwa-Zulu Natal is not complete without Umkhosi weLembe (King Shaka Commemoration Day). Providing a unique opportunity for non-Zulu South Africans to glimpse the heartbeat of Zulu pride, Umkhosi weLembe was the forerunner to all Heritage Day celebrations.

The public holiday on September 24 was first known as Shaka Day, and bears witness hundreds of Zulu men and women, dressed in full traditional gear, remembering the great founder of their tribe.

Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini and traditional prime minister to the Zulu nation, prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi will lead the jubilant celebration of the 200-year Zulu legacy, along with numerous other dignitaries, including KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu.

If you are not already planning to, make sure you stop in at the celebrations at the KwaDukuza Recreation Grounds in KwaDukuza (Stanger) on Thursday, September 24.
