Beware of stone throwers at Shaka’s Rock bridge

A North Coast driver’s windscreen was shattered by a rock thrown off the Shaka’s Rock bridge on the N2 at about 11.15am on Tuesday.

The driver, Dean Pillay, posted on Facebook that he saw a group of children standing on the bridge after his car was hit by a rock.

“I got hold of three of the children and they told me that the child who threw the rock had run away. They said he was 13 years old,” said Pillay. 

Pillay took the other children to the Umhlali police station and reported the incident.

“The police said the boy is under age and they cannot open a case, because they cannot arrest him. They went to his home and gave his mother our number.”

However, KZN police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane disagreed.

“If a crime has been committed, whether it was by a minor or not, a case may be opened,” said Zwane.

Pillay went on to say that he had met with the boy’s mother, but the boy was still missing.

Umhlali SAPS’ Captain Anisa Shaik confirmed that she had seen the damaged car at the police station.

“The windscreen was badly damaged on the passenger’s side. Thankfully no one was hurt,” said Captain Shaik.

Pillay warned people to be aware of the potential danger as stones thrown from the bridge could cause a serious accident.
