After a hijacking in Shakaskraal last Thursday, the Umhlali Task Team together with Umhlali detectives arrested three people last Friday, also believed to be involved in a number of business robberies on the Dolphin Coast and in KwaDabeka, Verulam, Tongaat and Emanguzi.
According to police they were found in possession of two unlicensed pistols and ammunition.
The men are aged between 20 and 25 and will appear today in the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court facing charges of hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The recovered firearms are being sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.
Last Thursday, November 19, a man and his girlfriend were sitting in his vehicle at about 11pm in Shakaskraal when they were hijacked by three armed men.
The hijackers took their victims for a ride, dropping them off on the side of the road some distance away, before making off with the vehicle.
KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the members for the arrests.
“We highly appreciate the relationship we had with the members of the community for giving us information about the whereabouts of the suspects,” she said.
