Across South Africa, nine million girls aged between 11 and 19 years miss a week of school every month due to a lack of sanitary pads.

This affects both the self-esteem and the academic progress at school of girls forced to go without even the most basic form of female sanitary pads or tampons.

Project Dignity aims to change this. Founded by Sue Barnes, the initiative offers an affordable, safe and hygienic solution for feminine hygiene- the Subz Pads Pack. Each pack contains well designed, cotton underwear fitted with press studs and separate washable sanitary towels that can be attached to the panties and then removed and washed.

Caity Cocker, a Crawford College North Coast student in grade 10, collected a total of R10 920 for Project Dignity. Ably assisted by Melissa Lukombo, Tsabile Hlatshwayo and Jessica Broom from the College, and Danica Morais and Gabriella Broom from Crawford Preparatory, they delivered 60 Subz Pads packs to the girls at Sizani Combined Primary school earlier this month.
