Making dreams come true

Groutville Secondary School matric pupils have a Cinderella moment.

Every school girl dreams about her Cinderella evening, when she becomes a princess for one night at the matric dance.

For a few lucky pupils, this dream became a reality, when a 4×4 pumpkin carriage rolled into Groutville Secondary School last week, with two fairy godmothers on board, 12 dresses and a lot of pixie dust.

With a wave of their magic wands and a few tucks and pulls, Ubuhle Shakashead’s Nomvula Da Silva and Ballito Rotary’s Gail Stefano transformed the girls into princesses.

Da Silva said this project is important to her, because her Cinderella dream did not become a reality.

“I did not go to my matric dance, because I could not afford to buy a dress. This happens to many girls, so I wanted to do something to help,” said Da Silva.

Stefano said she was so impressed by the generous response she received from the community when she asked for dress donations.

“I just put a note up on Facebook and after two weeks, we collected 12 dresses, with about ten more already on their way. People are so giving and supportive,” said Stefano.

Thanks to this project, the girls can “rent” a dress for an evening, by paying a R100 deposit.

“When the dress is returned, we give back the R100, have the dress dry cleaned and so it is ready for the next dance.”

So far, Groutville is the first school who got the special visit, but Stefano said any school or matric pupil can rent a dress.

If you would like to rent or donate a dress, suit, shoes or any accessories, please contact Stefano on 083 484 0531 and help them make more Cinderella dreams come true.
