Meeting the blue suits

Netcare teaches Curro Mount Richmore School pupils about road safety and shows them what happens when you get hurt.

Netcare has started a trauma incident prevention program for schools, to teach children not to be scared of ambulances and paramedics.

Netcare media liaison officer, Chris Botha said the program aimed to teach children how to be safe and what to expect if they were injured.

“We teach the children safety around vehicles. This includes how to cross the road, to put their seat belts on and the consequences of not having them on when the vehicle they are in is involved in an accident,” said Botha.

Netcare Alberlito and the Netcare 911 crew invited pupils from Curro Mount Richmore School recently for a behind-the-scenes look at the hospital.

“The children were taken into the trauma unit, where they were shown what happens when people arrive at the hospital after they were injured. This was followed by a tour through the ambulances.”

Botha said the staff showed the children how to safely cross the road and how to make themselves visible when around vehicles.

“They also visited the Netcare rescue unit, where our rescue officer and base manager showed the children how all the equipment works, keeping them entertained and interested.”

Thanks to this outing, the children are now no longer frightened of visiting the hospital.
