Man busted with gold bars at King Shaka Airport

Alert official investigated the "bulging pockets" of a passenger.

A passenger from Dubai was caught by SARS customs officials with gold bars worth almost R3 million at King Shaka International Airport last week.

The luggage of the passenger, disembarking from Dubai, was searched after being profiled by the customs passengers team, but no contraband was found in his luggage.

However an alert official investigated further after noticing the “bulging pockets” under the man’s Kurta.

He found 48 gold bars weighing 5.6kg in the passenger’s pockets and a money bag wrapped around his waist.

SARS said the case is still being investigated, and the man has not yet appeared in court.

In another incident in Durban, officials found Ecstasy tablets to the street value of about R310 000 in an airmail parcel from the Netherlands, meant for a Durban address.

As part of a random search at the customs mail centre, officials scanned the parcel declared as a “car cover/ plant cover/ dog bag E130”.

The parcel was selected for further investigation after the scan showed what appeared to be a large amount of tablets in square packages.

Officials found several packets of white tablets taped to the products that were mailed.

It was detained for hand-over to the South African Police.
