MacDonald’s delivery driver knocked over at Ballito intersection

A MacDonald’s delivery driver was knocked off his scooter by a small truck during Monday evening’s heavy downpour.

Between 5.30 and 6pm, Craig Welman said he was returning to work, when he pulled up at the traffic lights and saw they were out of order.

“I waited at the intersection on the opposite side of the road to MacDonald’s until it was safe for me to move forward. I noticed a small, white truck steadily edging out on my left before it stopped halfway in the intersection,” said the 33-year-old Welman.

He said the truck remained stationery on the road for a short while which prompted him to pull out as he thought the truck was signalling him to go.

“As I reached the middle of the intersection, the truck moved forward again and knocked me off my scooter, which made me skid about five metres on the tar.”

His scooter is “considerably damaged” as a result of the crash, but he said it seems to still be in working order.

“The passenger helped me get my things out of the road, but after leaning my scooter against the traffic light, he said he would be right back, got back into the truck and they drove off. I managed to get the truck’s registration number before it disappeared and opened a case with Umhlali police later that evening.”

He said they did not provide him with any details.

Welman is bruised and scratched from the collision, but luckily escaped serious injuries.

“If anyone saw this incident take place, please come forward as I need help finding out who this driver is and who he works for,” pleaded Welman.
