Church elder murdered in Tongaat

No arrests have yet been made.

A Tongaat businessman and church elder’s body was found on Wednesday morning, December 30 at a school in Belvedere, Tongaat after he had been stabbed and strangled to death.

The 65-year-old Ronnie Munsamy went missing on Tuesday afternoon which prompted a search by family members.

Col Santha Moodley of Tongaat SAPS said Munsamy hired two grass cutters on Monday to tidy up the school grounds before the church’s upcoming New Year’s eve service.

She said the grass cutters called Munsamy the following day and asked him to meet them at the school so that they could retrieve a cell phone that they allegedly left behind at the school.

Munsamy’s relatives became concerned when he did not return home and a search was launched together with Rescue Unit South Africa and Tongaat SAPS.

Munsamy’s cell phone and silver Corsa bakkie were stolen.

The group searched all night, including the school grounds, but could not find Munsamy.

A cell phone signal was picked up from his stolen iPhone in Ndwedwe, which sent the search party on a wild goose chase.

After a long night of fruitless searching, a family member found his body on Wednesday morning at the school, hidden in overgrown grass and covered with a sheet.

Tongaat SAPS detectives recovered Munsamy’s Corsa bakkie on Wednesday at Gwala Farm in Tongaat, but no arrests have yet been made.
