No mercy for drunk drivers

Successful operations carried out by KwaDukuza police over festive season.

KwaDukuza SAPS and KwaDukuza Traffic and Crime Prevention arrested 218 drivers over the festive season.

Director of the KwaDukuza traffic and crime prevention Johnny Moodley said they conducted road blocks from Zinkwazi to Ballito on December 16, Christmas Day, Day of Reconciliation, December 27 and 28 and the first three days of January.

“Out of the 168 people we arrested, eight were taxi drivers and four truck drivers,” said Moodley.

KwaDukuza SAPS acting station commander Mdumseni Nene said liquor was the main cause of the crime committed during the festive season.

“From December 16 to January 4 we arrested 50 people for drunk driving in KwaDukuza. No murder cases were reported,” said Nene.

He believes that the operations they conducted, by closing down shebeens and taverns with no licenses, was a success.

“In the past we had a lot of murder cases reported from the taverns and shebeens and this year we kept a close eye on them. We were closing down the illegal ones and we ensured that those with a license closed on time,” said Nene.

Nene said they also noted a number of rape and domestic violence incidents committed by people who were drunk.

KwaDukuza community policing forum chairperson Sipho Hlatshwayo praised SAPS and KwaDukuza traffic and crime prevention for what he called an excellent job during the festive season.

“Police officers were all over the town and that made the residents of KwaDukuza feel safer. Well done to them for their good job,” said Hlatshwayo.

Both Nene and Hlatshawayo urged the community to work hand in hand with the police in fighting crime.
