Five minute gang hits Ballito

Organised gang burgles homes in minutes

Umhlali police are urging Ballito and Salt Rock residents to be aware of the “five minute” gang striking homes in the area.

Captain Yogendran Maharaj said the gang usually hit homes between 9am and 12pm on weekdays.

“That is because most of the houses are left empty and with no one home it is the opportune time to break in,” said Maharaj.

Maharaj warned that the thugs responsible are armed with knives and guns, so approaching them would not be a good idea. You should rather call the police.

He also said that they usually drive white or silver VW polo’s or Audi’s, so if you see a suspicious vehicle around your house, call the police.

Maharaj said when the gang arrived at a house they usually knock on the door or ring the bell on the gate and if there is no answer they break in.

“Last week they broke into a house on David Place, Ballito and on Dolphin Crescent in Salt Rock. They usually move in groups of three or four,” said Maharaj.

He also said there have been an increase in break in cases in the area of Maratea Flats on Jack Powell Road up to the Caravan Park in Salt Rock.

“I cannot say whether it is the five minute gang or not, because the burglaries usually happens at night and the five minute gang usually operate during the day. From last December to January, more than six cases have been reported,” said Maharaj.

If you need to report any suspicious car or any criminal activity call Umhlali SAPS on 032-9479900.
