Winning start to Calvin’s Future Legends onslaught
Salt Rock surfer outclassed rivals to win his first national event of the year, the Future Legends Junior Coaching Series with outstanding performances.
One of Salt Rock’s most successful surfing exports, Calvin Goor, started the year on the forefoot, winning his first national event of the year.
The first of a series of three Future Legends Junior Coaching Series events was held on January 23 and 24 at New Pier, Durban where Goor delivered three outstanding performances to outclass all 15 of his U16 boys rivals.
“Yesterday was an amazing day! I won the first of three High Performance Legends Centre trials. I learnt so much. Thank you to all those special people who have put their time and effort into making South African surfing better,” said a stoked Goor on Sunday after coming out tops.
Only the best 32 junior surfers (U13 and U16) from all over South Africa who have competed either for their province or South Africa are chosen to take part in the prestigious series, aimed at turning a handful of young surfers who show the greatest potential for the future, into contest winners over the next five years.
Mixing fierce determination with solid consistency and knowledge of the scoring criteria, Goor took home top honors.
“He won his first two heats with a solid maximum scoring of 300 percent, following through to the end with the same consistency,” said his mother, Joanne.
In his first heat, Goor collected the scalp of current South African U16 champion, Max Elkington from Cape Town. Maintaining momentum, Goor then knocked out 2015 SA championship finalist, Luke Slipjen before facing two fellow KZN surfers, Koby Oberholzer from Amanzimtoti and Karl Steen and Capetonian Julian Zens in the final round.
The aim of the Future Legends Coaching Series is to identify, develop and nurture emerging junior talent.
The series focuses on the four foundation pillars of modern surfing being physical, mental, equipment and surf.
With a two week High Performance Surfing Academy coaching course, to the value of R12 000 per participant, up for grabs for the four division winners, there is a lot at steak for the young surfers.
The next events in the series are set to take place on February 27 and 28 and March 19 and 20 at the same venue after which the series winners will be announced.
