Shavathon makes bald beautiful

Many people shared their experience with cancer in what was a stunning display of community spirit and support.

The air was thick with excitement on Saturday, February 27, and the atmosphere colourful as scores of people showed their support for the famous ‘Shavathon at Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

To raise much needed funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and to raise awareness for the disease, courageous volunteers had their heads shaved while others dyed their hair with a variety of bright, bold colours.

One of the organisers of the day, the Cancer Support Network’s Elsa Fouche, said the day was special as many people shared their experience with cancer in what was a stunning display of community spirit and support.

“It really was a rollercoaster of emotions – there were lots of tears, but also plenty of laughter as people came and spoke to us about their reasons for taking part in the Shavathon. Everyone had a story to tell and that is what is so amazing about these events.

“Our cancer patients must know that we, as the community, care and want to assist as we walk the road with them,” said Fouche.

Some of the girls from Simply Models volunteered to help shave heads and dye hair for the cause.

A staggering one in five people worldwide is affected by cancer, either by being diagnosed themselves or having a family member with the disease.

“The fact that so many people took part, makes all of this so worthwhile, and very rewarding for us. A big thank you also to Lifestyle and the Simply Models girls for their amazing support – we appreciate it all,” said Fouche.
