A pedalling surprise

The excited and incredibly courteous 584 pupils could not wait to see the colourful bicycles.

Three men in tight, grey gear arrived in their 4x4s, carrying bicycles, helmets and a big cheque on a rainy afternoon last week at Isnembe School in Tongaat.

The Ballito businessmen, lead by Julian Bryant from East Rand 2 East Coast, are united in cycling and helping others.

“We often pass the old, little school on our rides and I am always amazed by how road savvy and polite the pupils in their snow white uniforms are,” said Bryant, who has been involved in various charity cycle events.

“A few of us had bicycles and bits and pieces we did not need anymore. We chose to give them to Isnembe, along with a R2500 donation, because the school has such a stunning outlook on education and they do so much to uplift their pupils and the community.”

The excited and incredibly courteous 584 pupils could not wait to see the colourful bicycles and the passionate principal, Nadeera Bhugwandass, was thrilled with the surprise.

“I could not believe it when Julian visited us and offered to hand over the bicycles. We have such a long wish list of things we need for our no-fee school, but this was just the cherry on top,” said Bhugwandass, who went to the nearly 90-year-old school herself, which was built by Indian indentured farm laborers in 1928.

A total of six bicycles, two helmets, one pump and two additional wheel sets were handed to the school.

With all the excitement, the principal and teachers had not yet decided if the bicycles would be awarded to the pupils based on academic or sport achievements.
