#Letters: Umdloti public beach facilities a decade in decline

Broken toilets and showers and expired and under-resourced medical supplies are the order of the day.

Rory Macpherson, DA North Durban constituency chair, writes:

The Umdloti Tidal Pool was once part of a series of Blue Flag beaches in Durban (eThekwini).
South Africa was the first country outside Europe to implement the Blue Flag system, and Umdloti was one of the early adopters.

A key part of the Blue Flag criteria was the quality of lifeguarding facilities and equipment, public toilets, beach cleanliness, general safety and, importantly, water quality. Sadly, not only did all the beaches lose their Blue Flag status, but the city also abandoned the programme entirely several years ago.

Another concern was the demolition of the Umdloti lifeguard tower and facilities some 12 to 15 years ago without consultation. The ongoing use of temporary lifeguard facilities and toilets remains an eyesore for residents and visitors.

Broken toilets and showers and expired and under-resourced medical supplies are the order of the day. Add dilapidated uniforms and inadequate training and it is no wonder that Umdloti’s professional lifeguards are becoming disillusioned.
