Bus owners devastated at driver’s death

The bus driver was a polite and respectable man who leaves behind two young children.

The owners of the Tongaat Circle Bus Company are still in shock at the murder of one of their drivers while he was driving a loaded bus early this morning.

The driver was reportedly shot in the head by one of the passengers while driving on the Watson Highway towards the M4.

He lost control of the bus and it went down an embankment.

The bus was carrying about 20 people, who received treatment for shock and minor injuries.

A security guard was seen helping the passengers escape the wrecked bus through one of the windows.

“I think it was a guard from Msinsi security company,”said Andre Vorster, who had been driving past and stopped when he saw the accident.

One of the directors, Joey Govender told the Courier that Zathe Gumede, about 44 years, was an employee of the company for many years.

“He was such a well mannered and polite person and was part of our family,” Govender said.

Manager of the bus company, Vinesh Rugbeer said Gumede was kind and a good employee and driver.

“We are traumatised over not only his death, but the way he died,” Rugbeer said.

“This respectable man leaves a wife and two small children bereft of a husband and father.”

In response to the story on the North Coast Courier’s Facebook page, Lyndy Xapile said: “May his soul rest in peace. I’m very sad and shocked. He was a very good driver, humble, respectful and loved his job. He will be missed. Condolences to his family and colleagues. Rest in peace bhuti wami#shattered#.”
