Four must-try brownies in Ballito

Reporter Elana Geist goes in search of the best brownies in the beautiful holiday town of Ballito.

When that chocoholic craving beckons, a chocolate brownie must be found.

My chocolate-loving colleague, Michelle Dennis and I went on a mission around town to find the best in the brownie world and realised that getting your hands on these little guys was surprisingly difficult as not every restaurant had them on the menu or those that did, did not have them in stock.

These four stops are guaranteed to make your brownie moment a memorable one.

Zaras Cafe

Pure chocolate heaven on a plate.

Look: Her appearance is decadent, moist and mouth watering. She knows her affect on people and let’s not forget her nutty side.

Taste: An intense chocolatey experience. The crunchy nut factor breaks the sweetness and leaves behind an almost toffee like sensation in your mouth.

Price: The most expensive out of the four at R26, but worth every cent.

Where: The Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

Delish Sisters

A gourmet brownie at this foodie heaven.

Look: Dense, rich and intriguing.

Taste: The crunchy outside breaks into a mousse-like interior of rich chocolate with little fudge flavour bursts.

Price: R25

Where: The Litchi Orchard, Salt Rock.

If you need a serious pick-me-up, this is your answer.

Berni’s Home Industry and Coffee Shop

Big, bold and scrumptious, this number is one for cake lovers.

Look: The biggest of the four, with a drizzle of icing on the top.

Taste: Good chocolate taste, less gooey.  This brownie is free from the traditional nuts, but will give you the chocolate hit you crave.

Price: R20

Salt Cafe

A bit more conservative, but definitely not boring, like Heidi Klum – fun, flirty, but not overpowering.

Look: Lighter in colour and elegantly slim.

Taste: We spotted a coffee note in this chewy brownie with a moist centre. This is a great option for those of you who don’t have a severe sweet tooth. No nuts here, so safe to eat for those who are allergic. This is a winner combined with a good cup of coffee.

Price: R20

Where: The corner of Ocean Drive and Old Main Road, Chakas Rock.
