Ballito teens collect groceries for security guard’s bereaved family

Ballito teenagers, Courtney Fitchat and Deryn Burns, were overwhelmed with emotion when they dropped off donated groceries at the house of a security guard who was killed in Ballito two months ago.

Enforce security officer Moses Makhoba was ambushed after responding to a burglary at Mangwanani African Spa in the business park on August 9.

He left behind two children, one whose mother had passed away last year and his new wife who is expecting Makhoba’s third child.

After reading the story in The North Coast Courier, the 17-year-old girls were filled with compassion for the family and started a drive to help them.

They were overwhelmed with the response.

“We managed to collect about four boxes full of groceries as well as four sets of uniforms.

Boxes were placed in our school office, Crawford College North Coast and we went around collecting items from people who wanted to donate,” said Fitchat.

With help from their parents, the girls delivered the items to Makhoba’s home in Groutville last week.

“When we arrived at the house we could see that the family was still in mourning. We were greeted by the sad smiles of Moses’ mother, cousin, and aunt. When they saw us walking in with boxes full of groceries, they all started sobbing. Moses’ mother cried the most and although they could not speak fluent English, they kept thanking us,” said Fitchat.

Enforce Security community projects Manager Nikki Malmaun said a trust fund for the children had been set up.
