UPDATE: New mall right on track

The new Ballito Junction mall has much to offer

The new Ballito Junction regional mall is scheduled to open its doors in March and construction is reaching its final stages. According to the chairman of Flanagan and Gerard Property Development Investments, Patrick Flanagan, they are still on track to open on March 23.

“Once you compromise, you are compromised,” said Flanagan.

The new mall represents an investment of R1,75 billion and is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy and job market.

Probably one of the most noticeable effects the mall will eventually have on Ballito will be on the roads, as people flock to go shopping and the like.

A new ring road will be in place to accommodate traffic around the mall and there is even a proposal to realign the M4 so that it empties into Ballito closer to the Virgin Active gym, where the new northern access road to the Junction is.

The Junction has also been designed in such a way that there will be separation between consumer and service vehicles – meaning all those big delivery trucks will not end up in your way when you’re dropping off the kids at school.

“All road plans, traffic impact assessments and traffic improvements have been approved by the KZN transport department and KwaDukuza local authorities,” said Flanagan.

The Junction will have a whopping five levels of parking and three levels for shopping with a comprehensive mix of tenants waiting to meet your every shopping need. According to Flanagan the mall is already fully let so there will be no empty spaces when they open their doors.

The mix of tenants was built up around the Junction’s current ‘anchor’ stores: Dis-Chem and Pick n Pay.

Four more large anchor stores are set to join them: Edgars and Woolworths will each have a two level premises of 6000 and 6500 square metres respectively while Game and Checkers will each occupy one level and be 5500 and 4000 square metres respectively.

All major banks will have branches at the mall. One thing everyone is looking forward to is the Nu Metro, with an eight screen cinema complex including Scene Xtreme – a big screen format Imax equivalent – and Scene VIP cinemas.

The grand opening will also see the arrival of a number of brands that do not yet trade in Ballito, including: Tread + Miller, Tsonga, Carlton Hair, Cherry Design, Swarovski, Watches Unlimited, Street Gear, Casa Bella, Typo, RVCA, Swatch, Turn ‘n Tender Steakhouse, Keedo Kids, Beluga, Goldrush Bingo and Entertainment, Exclusive Books, Adidas, Cotton On and many more.

With all this in mind, the only thing left for locals to do is to wait in feverish anticipation for the grand opening. Go on a tour of the Ballito Juntionwatch the vidoe on The North Coast Courier website.
