Holidaymaker drowns at Umdloti beach

The man was reportedly from Gauteng and arrived in Umdloti yesterday on holiday

A midday swim at the North Beach tidal pool in Umdloti took a turn for the worst for an elderly Gauteng man on his first day of holiday on the coast.

According to Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha, panic sparked amongst beach-goers when they noticed the man in his seventies, floating on his back in the tidal pool.

Lifeguards pulled him from the water before Netcare911 paramedics began resuscitation.

After 45 minutes, he was declared dead.

“We believe he may have suffered a heart attack while swimming,” said Botha.
