Ballito’s roadside Christmas tree makers are here to spread festive joy
Zimbabwean-born Maxwell Chishangu arrived in South Africa in 2010 seeking a new beginning and, in his own words, "to find life".
Between Umhlali Golf Estate and Manor Estates sits a man who has spent hours searching the wilderness of the North Coast for the perfect minimalist’s Christmas tree – and he has a few for you to choose from.
Zimbabwean-born Maxwell Chishangu arrived in South Africa in 2010 seeking a new beginning and, in his own words, “to find life”.
While opportunities had at the time not been plentiful in Pietermaritzburg, he relocated to the North Coast where he and his son today sell mostly carpets to get by.
But in celebration of Christmas, the 45-year-old Maxwell saw an opportunity to create unique Christmas trees with an artistic flair.
And sales are not doing too badly either.
Maxwell and 22-year-old Raphai search for perfect large branches to turn into a simplistic, white Christmas tree.
The process after selection is simple – the branches are sanded down and then painted before being mounted on a piece of wood.
On average they sell 2 to 3 trees a day, varying in sizes and prices between R150 and R200.
