From Groutville to the Guggenheim

Two North Coast residents are determined to uncover the next generation of untapped artistic talent.

Sbusiso Phiri and Prince Ndamase are both former students of Nonhlevu Secondary School in Groutville, who have pursued careers in creative fields.

Phiri is studying graphic design at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, while Ndamase works as an artist.

Together they formed No Limits Draws, a foundation with a mission to introduce underprivileged students to the arts.

“We often see learners with the talent to pursue artistic careers, but they do not know how to get a foothold. For example, even though you might be the best natural artist in the country, no university programme is going to accept you without a portfolio of work. That is why we host competitions so these pupils can gain expertise for the future,” said Phiri.

Aside from the practical admin side of things, Phiri said the learning curve he faced when entering university was far more challenging than that of pupils from better-funded schools.

“We really just want to give guidance to these kids so they don’t feel completely at sea when faced with a new challenge.”

Last week, No Limits Draws held one of their competitions where it all started, at Nonhlevu Secondary.

Nine hopeful artists between the ages of 15 and 20 competed over 4 days, honing their final product for the judging on Friday.

They were allowed to use any material they had access to, with most choosing pencil drawings, while some painted.

Each day the pupils finished one piece of work which was critiqued by Phiri and Ndamase.

The final competition was decided on 3 out of the 4 pieces that each artist completed.

First place was claimed by the talented Sandile Mhlongo (17), Nompulelo Sthole finished second and Sakhile Hlatshway third.

They won art supplies sponsored by No Limits Draws.

Phiri and Ndamase hope to hold regular competitions and outreach programmes, but need funding to make that a reality.
