Keeping the spark alive for 60 years, this is the Southwoods’ love story

The love story of Tony and Netta Southwood, is one that spans almost their entire lives.

The couple first became part of the furniture locally when they opened the third Spar in the country, in Umhlali in 1983, which later tragically burnt down.

This week, on December 15, they celebrate their 60th anniversary. Having practically grown up together as family friends, their love blossomed early and they started dating when Tony was 20 and Netta just 18.

Born in Johannesburg, 82-year-old Tony relocated to the North Coast at the age of 4 with his parents.

His father, Charles, a doctor, was the one who broke the news to Tony that Netta was expecting their first child, Noleen.

Netta, born in Durban, has been a North Coast resident almost all of her life and grew up in Umhlali.

They were married in Manning Road Methodist Church, Glenwood, Durban on December 15, 1961, moving to Umhlali again two years later.

But what does it take to make 60 years of marriage work?

“Unconditional love, forgiveness and God,” they agreed.

While Tony jokingly claims to be the glue of their marriage, Netta points out that every argument is always resolved instead of leaving it to fester.

They fondly recall how they used to have shoppers’ orders packed and delivered to their doors when they opened the Spar supermarket.

Netta also taught speech and drama at Umhlali Preparatory. In their spare time they played golf and tennis. Tony was the first player to score a hole-in-one on the Umhlali Country Club course.

With 4 children, Tony and Netta are expecting to become great grandparents in May next year.

The couple relocated to Brettenwood Eco Estate 10 years ago, during which time Tony designed 26 homes.

Reflecting on this milestone, daughter Noleen said as children they always experienced unconditional love and devotion from their parents.

“We are grateful for their example of steadfast commitment to a solid marriage.

“Most of all, they have shown us how to live in God’s peace and to keep the faith. It was always an inspiration to watch them serve the community, whether in the church, serving on various committees, or just simply by hosting friends and loved ones in their home.”

Tony and Netta will enjoy their 60th anniversary by travelling between Plettenberg Bay, Mosselbay and Knysna this December.
