Storm rips roof off centre for senior citizens in Maphumulo
The centre provides meals for more than 300 senior citizens every day.
A community centre providing support for senior citizens in Maphumulo, was recently destroyed by a storm.
The centre, erected in 1995, belongs to the Umtshatha Ngubo Organisation and provides, among others, meals for more than 300 senior citizens every day.
Centre manager, Sibusiso Delwa, said the roof of the main building, outside building and garage were blown away.
“The gogo and mkhulus can no longer come and enjoy their daily meals here. It was also a place for them to socialise and do their sewing and craftwork.
“Our other concern is the garage, because the vehicles are left exposed and we fear they may be stolen,” said Delwa.
The estimated value of the damage is R250 000. Delwa said although they receive support from the Department of Social Work, it is inadequate to fund such massive repairs.
“We request anyone who can help repair the roofs to contact us so we can resume our support programmes for the elderly as quickly as possible, especially the meals initiative.”
