Melville fashionista sews her dreams a dress at a time

When 28-year-old Khona Khumeni took sewing lessons to nurse her obsession with refined clothes, she did not realise it was the start of a booming business.

The elegant young woman from Melville township said she was unemployed and could not afford dressing up, which she likes to do.

But even on those rare occasions she managed to save up a little money to spoil herself, she struggled to find the right size.

“As a plus size woman getting the perfect fit is always a problem, so to dress up the way I like and be comfortable, I went for basic sewing lessons to make my own dresses. Other plus sized women then approached me, asking for my dresses. That ignited my business and today we have proud customers across the country,” said Khumeni.

She is also well known for her stunning pinafore and apron dresses.

Holding a financial management diploma from Thekwini College, the bubbly young entrepreneur works from her home garage with two employees.

Her long-term goal is to own a clothing factory producing her own clothing label.

“My short-term goal is that I want to begin offering sewing classes and buy at least five sewing machines so I can employ more people. Last December I had to stop taking orders because we could not deal with the demand. From a business perspective, I believe one should work within one’s limitations, otherwise the quality of your products is compromised. Responsible growth is the key,” said the mother of two.
