Thompson’s Bay beach is closed owing to a sewage spill caused by the widespread power outage on Sunday which made sewerage pumps inoperable near Simbithi.

KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu, said only Thompson’s Bay was affected and other beaches in KwaDukuza remained open to the public.

A team is working on the problem and once operations resume, necessary tests will be conducted to determine when the water will be safe for swimming.

The power outage was caused by a breakdown of the two 132kv breakers at Eskom’s Avon substation in Shakaskraal late on Sunday afternoon, affecting sections of Ballito, Salt Rock, Palm Lakes, Tinley Manor, the Umhlali Country Club and surrounds, Imbonini and Simbithi.In the north N

ewtown, Townview, Blythedale, Groutville and Ntshawini were also plunged into darkness.

At 4.50am today, ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan said KDM network manager Christo Prinsloo confirmed Eskom teams were still in the process of completing repairs.
“Supply will be restored during the course of the day,” said Makhan.
