Thompson’s Bay beach remains closed after the shutdown on Monday because of a sewage spill.

According to Siza Water operations manager Kobus Fourie, the sewage overflow was caused by a blockage created by excessive sand entering the municipal shower facilities’ sewer connection.

This led to the standby diesel pump and its inlet pipe opposite Santorini to clog up and fail.

He said the spill was not caused by Sunday’s power outage as previously speculated.

“Siza Water will remove the sand from the Simbithi Drive sewer pump station at night this week, and we apologise in advance for the disturbance our activities may cause residents in close proximity.

“Unfortunately, the operation cannot be done during normal hours as the inflow of sewage is too high.

“The KwaDukuza Municipality has undertaken to install a sand trap on their connection, as well as maintain it to prevent future problems,” said Fourie.

KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu, said once the repair work and water quality tests have been completed, the beach will be reopened to the public.
