Crawford North Coast’s founding principal Dr Peter Hawkey dies
Dr Hawkey managed the transition from Uthongathi School to CINC, and the school grew from humble beginnings with about 500 pupils to 1 100 in all phases.
Crawford International North Coast College’s (CINC) founding principal, Dr Peter Hawkey, died on January 5 after a long battle with Covid-19 and resulting complications.
Dr Hawkey served the college with distinction from 1997 to 2010.
Graham Crawford employed him to establish this premier private school on the North Coast, as he believed he was the best person for the task based on his respected educational leadership achievements at Glenwood and Northwood high schools.
He had already proved his abilities as a teacher of mathematics and had attained a Doctorate degree in mathematics from the University of SA.
Dr Hawkey managed the transition from Uthongathi School to Crawford North Coast , and the school grew from humble beginnings with about 500 pupils to 1 100 in all phases.
He was a humane manager and leader who acted with integrity and trust, empowering his teachers to be the best versions of themselves.
He tempered his style with a delicate balance of firmness and humanity, thereby winning the trust and dedication of his staff.
He was respected by parents, pupils and staff during his tenure as principal. As such, CINC became more than a school, more like a home where family members connected with each other on a personal level.
His spirit continues to live on in the life of the school, as he left a dynamic legacy.
Drama teacher Melissa Wood said, “It is not often in a lifetime that you meet a man as wonderful as Dr H – the kind of man who always considered his staff and their needs as part and parcel of work.
“He was a headmaster who expected you to bring your babies with nannies to school when you returned from maternity leave. Why not have your family around your work and your work around your family. That is how Crawford has always been, a family.
“It is this legacy that he leaves behind, a place of great importance imbued with the memory of a man of great importance, who will be with us, always.”
